Every day in music history tells a different story. Some days celebrate towering guitar heroes. Others remind us of unforgettable voices. Today, we’re fortunate enough to enjoy a little of both. So, grab your morning coffee, settle in, and let’s take a look back at some of the moments that made July 23 a memorable day in music.
🌸 Happy Birthday, Alison Krauss (Born 1971)
Some artists command attention with power.
Others capture your heart with grace.
Alison Krauss has spent decades doing exactly that.
Blessed with one of the most beautiful and unmistakable voices in modern music, Alison has become a shining ambassador for bluegrass, country, folk, and Americana. Whether performing with Union Station or collaborating with artists from every corner of the musical landscape, she has always allowed the songs to speak for themselves.
I’ve always admired not only her incredible talent, but also the class, humility, and quiet elegance she’s brought to every stage she’s ever stood upon.
One of Alison’s beautiful recordings is “The Lucky One.” While the song tells the story of a free-spirited soul traveling through life on their own terms, every time I hear Alison sing it, I find myself thinking about the title a little differently.
We’re the lucky ones.
Lucky to have spent the last several decades listening to one of the most beautiful voices ever committed to record. Her music has comforted, inspired, and uplifted millions of listeners around the world. That’s the gift Alison Krauss has given all of us, and it’s one I’ll always be grateful for.

🎸 Happy Birthday, Slash (Born 1965)
Few guitarists have a sound that’s instantly recognizable after only a handful of notes.
Slash is one of them.
When Guns N’ Roses exploded onto the scene in the late 1980s, his blues-inspired phrasing, unforgettable solos, and unmistakable Les Paul tone helped redefine hard rock for a new generation. Songs like “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” “Paradise City,” and “Welcome to the Jungle” remain staples of rock radio because they still deliver the same excitement today as they did decades ago.
Happy Birthday to one of rock’s true guitar heroes.
🥁 Remembering Nick Menza (1964–2016)
As a former drummer myself, I have a special appreciation for musicians who understand that keeping great time isn’t enough—you have to give the music its heartbeat.
Nick Menza did exactly that.
While guitarists often receive the spotlight, Nick’s drumming helped power some of Megadeth’s finest recordings, including the outstanding Countdown to Extinction. His playing combined precision, groove, power, and taste, always serving the song while driving the band forward with incredible energy.
In my opinion, Nick Menza remains one of heavy metal’s most under-appreciated drummers.
Today, we remember a musician whose work continues to inspire drummers around the world.
🎹 1966 – Frank Sinatra Reaches No. 1
Frank Sinatra’s album Strangers in the Night reached the top of the Billboard album chart, becoming the only No. 1 album of his legendary career.
The title track quickly became one of Sinatra’s signature recordings and remains one of the defining vocal performances of the era. More than half a century later, it still sounds as timeless as ever.
And before someone asks… yes, our editorial staff has officially settled an ongoing debate. Despite earlier suspicions, Mr. Sinatra was not standing beneath the Lunar Module during the Apollo 11 landing. The investigation has concluded that he was, in fact, exactly where many fans would have expected him to be…
…enjoying one of his favorite cigars.

🎸 1969 – The Rolling Stones Hit No. 1
The Rolling Stones were sitting at No. 1 in the United Kingdom with “Honky Tonk Women.”
From Charlie Watts’ instantly recognizable drum intro to Keith Richards’ unforgettable guitar work and Mick Jagger’s swagger-filled vocal, the song became another classic in the Stones’ remarkable catalog and continues to energize audiences more than five decades later.
