As America celebrates 250 years of independence, we’re also celebrating the songs, artists, and moments that have become part of our nation’s soundtrack. From surf rock classics to legendary singer-songwriters, July 4 has given music fans plenty to remember.

Whether you’re firing up the grill, traveling with family, or watching fireworks tonight, thanks for making WTSG-DB part of your Independence Day celebration.

🌊 1964 – The Beach Boys Reach No. 1

On July 4, 1964, The Beach Boys scored their first No. 1 hit when “I Get Around” climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

The song captured the carefree spirit of summer and helped establish the Beach Boys as one of America’s defining bands. It also marked the beginning of a friendly creative rivalry with The Beatles that would help shape pop music throughout the 1960s.

🎸 1969 – A Stones Classic Arrives

The Rolling Stones released “Honky Tonk Women” in the United Kingdom on this day in 1969.

Driven by one of rock’s most recognizable guitar riffs, the song quickly became another classic in the Stones’ legendary catalog.

🎤 Happy Birthday, Bill Withers

Born on July 4, 1938, Bill Withers gave the world timeless songs including:

  • 🎵 Lean on Me
  • 🎵 Ain’t No Sunshine
  • 🎵 Lovely Day
  • 🎵 Just the Two of Us

His music continues to inspire listeners with its honesty, warmth, and unforgettable melodies.

🎸 1976 – The Clash Make Their Live Debut

💭 Thought of the Day

“Music has always been one of America’s greatest storytellers. Every generation leaves behind songs that remind us where we’ve been, who we are, and where we’re headed. Today, as we celebrate 250 years of freedom, let’s also celebrate the soundtrack that has united us along the way.”

Happy Independence Day from all of us at WTSG Digital Broadcasting!
