Today in Music History – June

A Day of Chart-Toppers, Rock Legends, and Music Milestones

June 11 has delivered some memorable moments in music history, from chart-topping classics to the birthdays of artists who helped define American rock radio.

🎸 1966 – The Rolling Stones Reach No. 1 with “Paint It, Black”

On this day in 1966, The Rolling Stones reached No. 1 on the U.S. charts with their groundbreaking hit Paint It, Black.

The song became one of the band’s most recognizable recordings and stood out for its innovative use of the sitar, introducing many listeners to Eastern musical influences for the very first time. The haunting melody, unforgettable rhythm, and dark lyrical themes helped make Paint It, Black a timeless classic that continues to receive airplay decades later.

🎵 1969 – The Beatles Score Another No. 1

Three years later, on June 11, 1969, The Ballad of John and Yoko reached No. 1 in the United Kingdom.

The song chronicled John Lennon’s marriage to Yoko Ono and the media attention that followed. One of the most interesting facts about the recording is that only John Lennon and Paul McCartney performed on the track, making it one of the few Beatles songs recorded without the full band present.

Despite the unusual circumstances, the song became another chart success for the legendary group.

🕺 1977 – KC and the Sunshine Band Make Billboard History

On this day in 1977, KC and the Sunshine Band scored another U.S. No. 1 hit with I’m Your Boogie Man.

The achievement marked the group’s fourth No. 1 single, making them only the second group in Billboard history at the time to earn four chart-topping hits.

Led by Harry Wayne Casey, better known as “KC,” the band helped define the disco era with a string of unforgettable hits including:

  • Get Down Tonight
  • That’s the Way (I Like It)
  • Shake Your Booty
  • I’m Your Boogie Man

Their upbeat sound became a staple of American radio and dance floors throughout the 1970s and remains a favorite with music fans today.

🎂 Music Birthdays – June 11

Frank Beard – ZZ Top (Born 1949)

Today we celebrate the birthday of Frank Beard, longtime drummer for ZZ Top.

Known for his steady groove and powerful drumming style, Beard helped drive classics such as:

  • La Grange
  • Sharp Dressed Man
  • Legs
  • Gimme All Your Lovin’

Ironically, Frank Beard is the only member of ZZ Top who is not famous for having a long beard!

Donnie Van Zant – 38 Special (Born 1952)

Southern rock fans also celebrate the birthday of Donnie Van Zant, founding vocalist of 38 Special.

The younger brother of Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Donnie helped build 38 Special into one of the most successful rock bands of the late 1970s and 1980s.

Hits such as:

  • Hold On Loosely
  • Caught Up In You
  • Rockin’ Into the Night
  • If I’d Been the One

helped define an era of American rock radio and continue to resonate with fans across generations.
