Before streaming playlists, CDs, cassette tapes, and even 45 RPM singles became household staples, a revolutionary new format changed the music industry forever.
On June 18, 1948, Columbia Records publicly introduced the 33⅓ RPM Long Playing Record, better known simply as the LP.
Prior to the LP, most commercial recordings were released on fragile 78 RPM records that could only hold a few minutes of music per side. The LP dramatically expanded playing time, allowing artists to present longer performances, complete collections of songs, jazz improvisations, classical works, and eventually the full-length albums that would define generations of music fans.
The LP transformed music from a collection of individual songs into a complete listening experience. Album artwork became an art form. Liner notes told stories. Side A and Side B became familiar companions to music lovers everywhere.
From legendary jazz recordings to classic rock masterpieces, the LP helped pave the way for albums such as Rumours, Hotel California, Aja, Dark Side of the Moon, Boston, and countless others that remain treasured by music fans today.
