On August 28, The Beatles meet Bob Dylan during a legendary night in New York, Tammy Wynette records “Stand by Your Man,” and we celebrate the country-music royalty of Tammy Wynette and George Jones. Deep Purple strikes gold with “Smoke on the Water,” Aerosmith tells us to “Walk This Way,” Peter Frampton comes alive, and Tina Turner receives her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Then we turn up the heavy stuff as Metallica unleashes “Harvester of Sorrow,” while Bruce Dickinson performs what was then his final show with Iron Maiden—and we follow The Mighty Bruce through his outstanding solo years before his triumphant return to Maiden with Adrian Smith.

We also open the record cabinet for some Billy Joel must-haves, celebrate Chicago drummer Danny Seraphine and jazz pianist Kenny Drew, and remember the extraordinary young trumpeter Clifford Brown—whose tragically short life inspired Benny Golson’s beautiful jazz standard, “I Remember Clifford.”
