Before “Help Me, Rhonda” took over the airwaves, the top spot belonged to Marvin Gaye with his classic hit “I’ll Be Doggone.”
But on May 29, 1965, The Beach Boys officially surfed past the competition and proved that the California Sound had become an unstoppable force in American music.
Their harmonies, energy, and feel-good summertime sound connected with an entire generation of listeners and helped define one of the most iconic eras in radio history.
🎵 A Brian Wilson Studio Masterclass
Written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love, “Help Me, Rhonda” was far more than just another catchy pop song.
Behind the scenes, Brian Wilson crafted the record with the help of the legendary Los Angeles studio musicians known as The Wrecking Crew — creating the driving rhythm, layered harmonies, and unmistakable surf-rock energy that made the track explode on radio stations across America.
Interestingly, an earlier version of the song — spelled “Help Me, Ronda” — had already appeared on the album The Beach Boys Today! earlier that same year. Recognizing the song’s massive hit potential, Wilson completely reworked and re-recorded the track for its single release.
The result? A faster, more energetic version featuring a standout lead vocal performance from Al Jardine that became an instant classic.

“Help Me, Rhonda” became The Beach Boys’ second-ever #1 single in the United States following their 1964 smash hit “I Get Around.”
