Set sail with CLASSICKONG for the August 30, 2026 edition of This Day in Music History from WTSG-DB. 🌊⛵🎙️

Today we begin with Christopher Cross and the timeless beauty of “Sailing,” which reached No. 1 on this day in 1980. Along the way, CLASSICKONG reflects on the remarkable power of a song to carry memories of the people we’ve loved, the people we miss, and those who may have simply sailed ahead.

We also remember an incredible era of radio when musical boundaries weren’t nearly as important as a great song. On the same dial you could hear rock, pop, soul, funk, jazz and country—and you never quite knew what the DJ might play next.

Then we turn up the FUNK with KC and the Sunshine Band’s “Get Down Tonight,” revisit Steppenwolf’s Slow Flux, the Texas International Pop Festival, John Lennon’s historic One to One concerts, and Jimi Hendrix at the Isle of Wight Festival.

The guitars get heavier with Tesla’s Psychotic Supper and Overkill’s Horrorscope before we spend some time with jazz legend Herbie Hancock, from Possibilities to the magnificent Maiden Voyage.

We also celebrate country pioneer Kitty Wells, recognize National Beach Day, and remember why the greatest music doesn’t need to fit neatly inside a box.
