On this August 19 edition, we revisit the beginning of The Beatles’ first North American tour, remember the television magic of The Midnight Special, crank up Emerson, Lake & Palmer, celebrate Fleetwood Mac’s The Dance and head to Dublin for a tribute to Thin Lizzy’s Phil Lynott.
We’re also celebrating birthdays for hard-rock powerhouse Ian Gillan, legendary drummer Ginger Baker, Queen bassist and songwriter John Deacon, pioneering jazz guitarist Eddie Durham and acclaimed jazz pianist Jimmy Rowles.
Then, in recognition of National Aviation Day, we remember aviation pioneer Orville Wright — although CLASSICKONG seems considerably more interested in the popcorn. 😂🍿 — before sharing the moving story of Major Glenn Miller, the great American bandleader who disappeared during World War II while traveling ahead of his military orchestra to prepare to bring music to the troops.
