On this August 17 edition, we celebrate Miles Davis and the timeless jazz masterpiece Kind of Blue, then turn up the volume for Deep Purple and the legendary Made in Japan — including a special appreciation of Jon Lord and the roaring Hammond organ sound that helped define hard rock.
CLASSICKONG also shares some deeply personal musical memories: discovering Stevie Ray Vaughan on MTV while still in high school, and remembering exactly where he was when the heartbreaking news of Stevie’s death came across the radio. Then it’s overseas with a well-worn cassette of Jean-Luc Ponty’s A Taste for Passion and the moment an electric violin opened up an entirely new musical world.
We’ll celebrate birthdays for guitar great Eric Johnson and Belinda Carlisle, remember Boston drummer Sib Hashian — including that absolutely legendary afro 😂 — and climb aboard Soul Train to remember Don Cornelius, the Soul Train dancers, and a time when Saturday television meant American Bandstand, great music, great dancing, and broadcasters who knew how to MC with class.
